Memberships

A Shopify membership program that earns you money every month

Most stores only earn when someone buys. A paid membership charges every month, whether an order arrives or not. Members pay a fee and get perks worth more than the fee.

The basics

What is a Shopify membership program?

A membership is a plan customers buy. They pay you a fee every month or every year. In return they get perks: money off every order, free shipping, or products nobody else can buy.

It is different from a loyalty program in one important way. Loyalty pays customers for buying. A membership charges customers up front, so the money arrives before the order does.

In Yuko, each plan is a Shopify product behind the scenes. Shopify takes the payment, applies the tax and handles the receipt, exactly as it does for anything else you sell.

The money is predictable

You know what members pay you this month before the month starts.

Members buy more often

Someone paying a monthly fee has a reason to use the perks they paid for.

Some products are members only

Gate a launch or a limited run so only members can check out with it.

How it works

Four steps to your first member

You build the plan once. Shopify takes the payments and Yuko applies the perks.

01

Build the plan

Give it a name, a price and a billing period. Pick monthly for a light commitment, or yearly to lock members in for longer.

02

Choose the perks

Pick up to five: money off every order, free shipping, gated products, faster points, or a free product each period.

03

Publish it in Shopify

The plan is a Shopify product, so it has to be published before customers can buy it.

04

Members join and pay

A customer buys the plan from the cart or your store. Their perks start at once.

The perks

Five things a plan can include

Pick three or four. A short list reads better on the storefront card than a long one.

One

Money off every order

Take a set amount or a percentage off everything a member buys. This is the perk members do the maths on. Make it big enough to cover the fee in two or three orders.

A member paying $9.99 a month needs to save more than $9.99 a month, or they cancel.

Two

Free shipping

Take shipping off every member order. It usually costs you less than a discount and members notice it more.

Free shipping is the perk members mention most when they explain why they joined.

Three

Products only members can buy

Gate a launch, a limited run or a bundle so only members can check out with it. Shopify blocks everyone else at checkout.

This is the perk that sells the plan itself, because members are the only people who can buy it.

Four

Points earned faster

Give members a higher points rate than everyone else, the same way a VIP level works.

Useful when you want the plan to feed the loyalty program rather than compete with it.

Five

A free product each period

Send members one product every month or every year as part of the plan. It works well for consumables people reorder anyway.

Pick a product with a low cost to you and a clear value to them.

Member-only products

Shopify stops non-members at checkout

A gated product is only gated if someone cannot buy it with a direct link. Yuko adds a checkout extension that checks for an active membership before the order goes through.

Your Shopify plan needs Checkout Extensibility for this.

Gated products
Mark which products only members can buy. Everything else stays open to everyone.
Checked at the order
The extension reads the cart at checkout and looks for an active membership.
A clear message
A customer without a membership sees why checkout stopped.
Nothing else changes
Checkout looks normal for members and for anyone not buying a gated product.
Selling the plan

Offer it where the saving is obvious

Nobody buys a membership from a pricing page they never open. The cart is where a customer can already see what the plan would save them on this order.

Cart upsell
Offer the plan in the cart, next to the total it would reduce.
Checkout upsell
One last offer at checkout, for customers who did not take it in the cart.
Profile widget
Members see their plan and renewal date in their Shopify account.
Your own page
Sell the plan as a Shopify product on any page you like.
Running the program

Every member in one list

A contract links one customer to one plan. Search by email or plan, filter by status, and open any contract to see its full history.

Who is subscribed
Every contract with its customer, plan, start date and next renewal.
Active, paused or cancelled
Filter by status, and pause or cancel any contract from its detail page.
Full history
Yuko logs every renewal and every status change against the contract.
Old prices stay
Raising a plan price does not change what existing members pay. They renew at the price they joined at.

FAQ

What merchants ask before they start

What is a Shopify membership program?

It is a paid plan customers buy from your store. They pay a fee every month or every year. In return they get perks such as money off every order, free shipping, or products only members can buy. The fee arrives whether or not they place an order.

How is a membership different from a loyalty program?

A loyalty program pays customers for buying. A membership charges customers up front. Loyalty rewards behaviour you want more of; a membership sells access. Many stores run both, because they pull in opposite directions and cover different customers.

How is a membership different from a VIP tier?

Customers earn a tier by spending. They buy a membership. A customer reaches Gold after spending enough, but anyone can buy a plan today. A plan can also include a faster points rate, so it speeds up how quickly someone reaches a tier.

How do members pay?

Each plan is a Shopify product behind the scenes. Shopify takes the payment, applies the tax and sends the receipt. Members pay monthly or yearly, whichever you set on the plan.

What perks can I include in a plan?

Five. Money off every order, free shipping, products only members can buy, a faster points rate, and a free product each period. Three or four reads better on a storefront card than all five.

Can I sell products only members can buy?

Yes. Mark the products as gated, and Yuko's checkout extension checks for an active membership before the order goes through. A customer without one sees a clear message instead of completing checkout. Your Shopify plan needs Checkout Extensibility.

Where do customers buy the plan?

From the cart, at checkout, or from a page on your store. The cart works best, because the customer can see the total the plan would reduce.

What happens when a member cancels?

Yuko marks the contract cancelled and the perks stop at checkout. You can pause a contract instead of cancelling it. Yuko records the change and can trigger a win-back email from Yuko or from Klaviyo.

If I raise the price, what happens to existing members?

Nothing. Existing contracts renew at the price the member joined at. A price change only affects people who join after it.

Do I need a loyalty program to sell memberships?

Switch your loyalty program on in Yuko first. Memberships run inside the same app and share one customer record. You do not have to give members points if you would rather not.

How much does a Shopify membership program cost?

Yuko Advanced is $30 a month and includes 300 orders, then $5 for each additional 100 orders. Growth is $199 a month with unlimited orders. Memberships, loyalty, referrals and VIP tiers are all in the same app.
